Scrimshaw
artist docks big ships in tiny spaces
Denise Kasper - Winston Salem Journal
Massive Clipper ships can be truly awe-inspiring,
overwhelming onlookers with their size and intricacies.
Peter Driscoll of Bermuda Run marvels at replicating
these vessels in pieces of ivory that can fit in the
palm of a hand.
A lithographic printer, Driscoll enjoys scrimshaw
what he calls the art of the engraver to capture
the beauty of historic buildings and ships. He retired
to Bermuda Run with his wife, Jo May, and decided to
pursue this passion full-time about five years ago.
He works with his hands.
I stay as close as I can to the technique the
whalers, who invented it, would have used, Driscoll
said. You can get a lot of detail in and I try
to make it a piece of art standing alone.

Pete was honored to have collaborated
with John Shelton on this project of creating
an historic memento for the Jamestown landing anniversary
"I am honored to have collaborated
with John Shelton on this project of creating an historic
memento for the Jamestown landing anniversary. Our crafts
blended perfectly in this effort. Scrimshaw, an original
American art form, is the appropriate medium to accentuate
the craftsmanship of John's glass blowing. When John
asked me to do the scrimshaws for the bottles, we both
envisioned the beauty of the final product." - Pete
