A Variety of Subjects
Pete is experienced at engraving a wonderful variety of
subjects - more so than any other professional scrimshaw
artist. Scrimshaw pieces make wonderful, thoughtful presents
for a loved one, co-worker or even for yourself. Over the
years Pete has engraved some 1,500 pets, wildlife and beach
scenes, automobiles, lighthouses, ships, military insignias,
collegiate icons, sports subjects and much more onto ivory.
The new, expanded website provides a new convenience for
customers as well as a way for Pete to spend less time and
money traveling -- and more time on his passion, creating
original scrimshaw art!
Scrimshaw: A Centuries-Old Tradition
Scrimshaw has been defined as "The American whalers'
art of engraving on Whale bone or ivory." In the early
19th century, on voyages lasting as many as four or more
years, whalers had much "downtime" which they
used to fashion artful gifts for loved ones back home, or
to trade for goods in far-away ports. These remarkable sailors
created an original American art form we call scrimshaw.
As a sailor himself, Pete was naturally attracted to this
maritime form of art. A native of Wisconsin, he moved to
North Carolina in 1991 after three years of traveling on
his 41-foot Ketch sailboat.
About the Ivory
Following the strict rules of the U.S. Department of Fish
and Wildlife, Pete uses only "Pre-Ban Ivory" that
was present legally in the United States prior to the ban
on ivory imports in1986. Documentation is gladly provided
upon request. Forms of legal ivory used are Woolly Mammoth
and Mastodon, found in Alaska and Siberia, as well as the
tusks of Walrus, Narwhal, Warthog, Elephant, and Sperm Whale
teeth. The majority of Pete's engraving, however, is done
on antique ivory piano keys purchased from piano restoration
companies. U.S. (Manufacturers have been prohibited from
using ivory for keys since the 1950s).
